Negotiation of Promotional Material For Local Organisation
Student Details Client Details
This CCP production project has been part of a team assignment between Greg Zbrozek and myself.
The assignment has been the most in-depth and enjoyable to date. Because of the many different parts that went into constructing it, it has taken a great deal of time and work and effort on both of us to complete.
With a brief that required the production of promotional material for a local organisational, institutional or charity; we looked at several options from the very beginning, before deciding on the right one.
When we first began work, having sat down together in class to decide on the right company, it was first decided that we would look into the animal charity organization called: The Blue Cross.
Originally, it was felt that because of their charity status, it would be a good thing to perhaps offer our services and complete this assignment at the same time.
Based in Felixstowe and not to far away from my residence, I had insisted that I it was going to be a good idea because of its location alone.
The potential was certainly there but unfortunately for us the Blue Cross already used an in house advertising and media department to do all their work for them. So although the first telephone conversation we made sounded promising, we ended up having to change tactics and direction.
Following a further discussion between both Greg and myself, I mentioned a company whom I had had previous dealings with and had worked for in the past.
The company being a small independent antique and second user furniture retailer also had a house removals department. And after looking at all our options, we both decided that we would look into this as our client for this assignment.
Our first port of call was going to be approaching the company itself. This was done by a telephone call to the owner Mr.Jens Skaarud.
It was fortunate for us that Jens was in fact looking at different options in the advertising field but had a limited budget. As of the past few months the company had not been doing as well as was anticipated, and with our offer on the table of providing a service for free as part of our studies; it was the perfect situation.
So, following the first few conversations both person to person and via the telephone, Greg and myself went as pre arranged and interviewed Mr.J.Skaarud; as part of the assignment and as our starting point for a chosen media product.

INTERVIEW BEGIN:
Q. Define your Company. FBS
A. Our Company F.B.S Felixstowe Business Services consists of several different
areas that we run together.
We have the Removals side, the Antiques side and the Second Hand furniture &
products Side. We also have a large storage Facility.
Q. Can you give us a brief history of the company and how it came about?
A. (Jens/Director) "Having been made redundant in 1982 I decided it was time to
follow a long time yearning to go it alone or find a position where I could be in charge and make the decisions. Ideally though, I wanted to work for myself.
It was actually by chance that I happened to come across an advert.
It was the original owner of F.B.S who was looking for a partner willing to invest and co run the company with him.
At this time however it was only a removals and storage business.
After a year or so I managed to buy out my partner and decided to try and expand
what F.B.S. could do as I knew it had a lot of potential.
By the end of 1983, having successfully maintained the house removals side and obtaining some financial backing, my wife and I decided to buy the shop that is below our storage facility. We decided to turn it into an antiques shop as my wife Janet and I have always had an interest.
That's about the size of it. Since then we have managed to keep ourselves afloat and taken the good with the bad years.
Q. Where would you like to see the business in five years time?
A. Well. To be honest this past year has been touch and go and if we could increase the turnover somehow it would be great. I know we are not alone in the odd struggle to find work but on the face of it I hope in five years are retirement fund will be looking a little bit more rosy.
Q. Which one of the following would be of most interest and help to you for your company.
1. A new promotional company website
2. New content for an existing website
3. The production of advertising for print media
4. The production of advertising for television and radio
A. As far as a website goes, we have looked into it before but it's not really something that would help us as our overall client base is really the local general public and local business. That's not to say we wouldn't take the idea further at some stage but not at the moment.
We've got several adverts on the Internet already and although they are down to basic details such as our address and business type we are happy with just that.
Janet my wife found one recently that is not directly down to us but a bonus anyway. It's on a site called City-Visitor.com and has our details and a map to show where we are.
Anyway, maybe one day we will look into having our own website if the business calls for it and we perhaps find a way to expand out of Felixstowe.
It's the same for the television and radio advert. We did have an advert at one time on local radio. That going back some time but we decided it wasn't really us and preferred as we do now to advertise locally and with conventional means. The idea of some kind of Print Media sounds a good bet.
Q. So with regards to advertising with print media, how would this help and what ideas have you in mind.
A. Something with our details and type of business would be great. I think if you could produce something that could be both colorful, tidy and small enough to be either put through a letterbox then that would be very helpful. Something like that could be left on counters and sent out in the post too.
We were looking at getting something like this done last year. My wife was looking at how we could get the local free press or one of the local newspapers like the East Anglian Daily Times to include something like this within it's pages like some of those that come through the door each week with magazines.
