INTRODUCTION

To begin this assignment, I decided to start from the ground up. Although I have had some experience with mailing lists prior to this internet module, I still found it difficult to come up with an acceptable definition that would explain to someone who didn’t know what a mailing list actually was.

So, to start I used the google search engine at www.google.co.uk and looked up the correct definition for “Mailing List.”

Several definitions became available from which I selected a few and defined my own in my own words.

Once I had completed this task I then went through the motions of joining a mailing list task by task and screen printed the different motions to show how I accomplished this.

With regard to the different objectives and options that can be used within the confines of a mailing list environment, I opted to create a question and answer type environmental approach. By completing the assignment in this way I was better able to show what I had learned.

1.  THE MAILING LIST CONCEPT

To begin with, one must first bear in mind that these types of lists can be joined up to from various sources.

Many companies these days choose the mailing list option for there various advantages over conventional ways and means of making customers aware of specifics, such as product updates and new available products.

On many company websites there are usually options to add a users email details somewhere on the page where the users personal details are inputted.

Once the company acquires this information it is then added to their database.

From here it is then simply an automated system via a computer program that then allows the companies information to be cycled and sent out to each of the listed clients.

The speed alone that is involved in this action and way of communicating information alone far outweighs any other technology.

The other way a mailing list is used is probably the most interesting and advantageous for both professional and personal use. This is when it is used in conjunction with a news group feed via a subscription.

The process is a simple one once the initial finding, joining and setting up the users account is completed.

This is the process I am going to complete from start to finish.

To begin with I am going to find a newsgroup that is of particular interest to myself.

From here I will sign up and join the group.

2.   FREEDOM OF CHOICE

This is the fun part of the assignment. I need to start by deciding on a suitable and acceptable topic of interest that I can then use as my starting point for the search.

There are many thousands of newsgroups available on the Internet. And because of this and from what I have learned from my various studies, certain important rules apply. The first one and the most important one is to always bear in mind that not all the information that is put up on the Internet can be trusted.

Factually, it is always of paramount importance to complete some kind of research into the information that is going to be read from anywhere on the Internet. All to often one will read some literature in electronic form and possibly believe that it is factual when infact it may be totally the opposite.

Where newsgroups are concerned, I am going to simply search via the Google search engine and see where that takes me to begin with.

3.  THE SEARCH

Having searched via www.gogle.co.uk with the keyword “newsgroups”, I was led to a site http://www.learnthenet.com/english/html/27srchn.htm
